Børge Mogensen was born in 1914 and studied at the classic School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen later working with Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In the early 1960s he designed the two sofas that I’ve actually bought at auction over the last two weeks. They are produced by Fredericia Furniture.

In 1962 Mogensen designed the 2213 sofa for his own home. It is quite a long sofa and is the one here in natural leather with the lower back. The current list price for one of these is 64,000 Danish Kroner (approximately £6,000) however good examples can be picked up for half this price in good second hand stores in Copenhagen; I saw examples of the black leather version selling for 32,000 Danish Kroner at Dansk Møblekunst recently; however the natural leather version is much more sort after. Unfortunately the 2213 I have is in less than perfect condition with a hole in the back and general wear and tear. Nevertheless it should one day fetch a decent price at auction in the UK.

Mogensen followed up the 2213 with the 2207/2208 series in 1963. This is the second sofa that I’ve recently bought and is the one here with the higher back in brown leather. Again the example I have is older, perhaps from the 60′s, and has some wear and tear. The 2207/2208 series is not as collectable as the 2213 but should fetch at least £1000 in a good UK auction house.
